Although many songs about the boll weevil were recorded by blues musicians during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, this one has become well known, thanks to Lead Belly's rendition of it as recorded by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1934. On this day in 1965 {May 15th} Brook Benton performed "The Boll Weevil Song" on the syndicated television program 'Hollywood A G-Go'... Four years earlier on May 15th, 1961 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... It also reached #2 on the Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart and #30 in the U.K. Mr. Benton passed away on April 9th, 1988 at the young age of 56 {pneumonia} May he R.I.P.
