Sometimes I hate the very distinction between "independent" and "major" music, because it's mislead some people to believe that only quality music is released by major record labels and that "indie" music in general is inferior to it.There are people out there who will only buy or listen to music released by a major record company... same group of people who believe that 99.9% of music on the radio is major release, unaware that at least 50% of such popular/radio music is technically independent

By "mainstream" do you mean signing to a major record label, or going toward a more conventional sound? Because, aside from money, the "Big X" companies were never as big as they were made out to be, and fine music barely ever existed on any major record label, ever.
