Although this song seemed to give hope to the victim of convict transportation, would he have any idea what the convicts suffered on the prison ships and again in the colony??A while back I was researching the biography of a volunteer settler in Van Deimen's Land, it became necessary to enter into detail about the cause and "need" for penal settlements in NSW and VDL. Many is the tear I shed as I learned about the inhumanity of man upon man. Here is a brief story :--1796 - the convict ship 'Britannia' sailed fro Cork with a cargo of mainly Irish political prisoners - it being commanded by Captain William Dennott.Word of mutiny reached his ear and a suspect - William Trimble was flogged until he named a ringleader James Brannon.A tough, rebellious and abusive man, took from the flagellator in several sessions 800 lashes from which he died, never having been seen by the ship's surgeon. His body was thrown overboard without ceremony. There followed a rampage of floggings, blood and strips of flesh streaked the main deck, men screamed in agony and women cried until there were no more tears to shed.Dennott was never brought to justice.
