If I were you (and I wish that I were you)

All the things I'd do to make myself turn blue

I suppose I'd start by removing all my clothes,

tie my pantyhose around my neck

I'll be that girl - and you would be right over

If I were a field, you would be in clover

If I were the sun, you would be in shadow

And if I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow

If you will not have me as myself,

perhaps as someone else

Perhaps as you I'll be worth noticing

Then even a eunuch won't resist

The magic of a kiss from such as me

I'll be that girl - and you would be right over

If I were a field, you would be in clover

If I were the sun, you would be in shadow

If I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow

It's time to kick off your shoes,

learn how to choose sadness

It's time to throw off those chains,

addle our brains with madness

'Cause we've got plenty of time

to grow old and die

But when at last your beauty's faded

you'll be glad that I have waited for you

When you're done

with being beautiful and young

When that course is run, then come to me

I'll be that girl - and you would be right over

If I were a field, you would be in clover

If I were the sun, you would be in shadow

If I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow

There'd be no tomorrow

There'd be no tomorrow

There'd be no tomorrow

There'd be no tomorrow

A lot of older BNL fans thought this album was their sellout album, mainly due to One Week. But almost 20 years later, it still holds up as one of their best, IMO. Every single song on Stunt is fabulously evocative of the work of the best songwriters - it makes you feel as if you are actually there experiencing it. And now that I'm no longer that (cough)highschoolstudent(cough), I can really appreciate the depths of emotions involved in creating these masterpieces. I truly hope that Steve comes back to the band because they really reach those heights with his super-underrated writing skills.

A really underrated BNL song.

Is it suicide the song writer sugests for himself or is the singer suggesting the girl referenced in the song should kill herself?...because if he were her...he would......

I just realised, even though it sounds so upbeat, there are several suicide references?"to make myself turn blue (suffocation)' ''tie my pantyhose around my neck(strangulation)' '' if I had a gun there'd be no tomorrow(shooting themself)'''' when you're done with being beautiful and young, when that course is run, come to me(commit suicide too?)''Just my imagination?

"If I had a gun there'd be no tomorrow", pretty much the nicest way of referencing suicide I've ever heard. Probably the reason I didn't notice it as a kid too. The upbeat tone of the song doesn't change so the line gets lost in the rest of the song. I definitely enjoy the subtlety (even though it's not truly subtle once you actually know the lyrics.)

I definitely didn't appreciate this song when I was younger. But I love it as an adult!

I believe this sing is about is about an ex of his that really screwed him over and he's telling her what he would do if he could be her for just a minute. Simply put...she should kill herself.

i just love the line "if I had a gun, there'd be no tomorrow". wrote that and other emo quotes/lyrics all over my notebooks in high school.

And I think you just won the damn internet.

I think the song is about schizophrenic auto-erotic asphyxiation.

Actually, it's a song about Communism. No idea how you guys missed that.

Thanks for posting this song. Very interesting lyrics. BNL were under-rated songwriters.
