Aurora Nova and The Wild Places are beautiful songs about appreciating and respecting our planet and all of God's creatures. Unfortunately so many of these lovely animals are currently on the Endangered Species List. Let's all do our part to help them reach a healthy populations status and save them from extinction. By saving our fellow creatures we are saving ourselves.

The Wild Places

I was walking alone through the lofty San Juans

With a heart full of light and a head full of songs

I was thinking of time and how much it will cost

To recapture the souls that we surely have lost

In the cities and towns there are millions who dream

But the traffic's so loud that you can't hear them scream

There's a heaven on earth that so few ever find

Though the map's in your soul and the road's in your mind

So many mountains before us, so many rivers to cross

Where is the wisdom to bring back the vision we've lost

Can we gaze with the wonder of children

Into the deafening night

Has it gotten so dark that we cannot remember the light

When you sleep on the ground with the stars in your face

You can feel the full length of the beauty and grace

In the wild places man is an unwelcome guest

But it's here that I'm found and it's here I feel blessed

Thank you so much for the message of caring for our Planet. If only your attitude and concerns were normal. Our culture is infected with maybe ancient hostility toward wilderness and primitivity. This is the root of our hostility not just to the earth's wilderness, but the wilderness in humanity. People like Dan Fogelberg are rare souls who just don't jibe with that core metallic-Roman superiorist mechanical arrogance.

...of the rare interviews Dan did that I listened to he said something to the effect that he beleived in things such as... I'll stop here, because it's been so very long ago since I listened to this that I don't want to totally misquote Dan. But he stood for amazing things, sang of himself and things that mattered to him, and kept growing. I would love to have seen Dan in his own studio he finally had out West. Don't you know he was probably like a little boy, excited over playing all...

I never knew so many others loved Dan Fogelberg's music as I have since first hearing Home Free; I was instantly part of the journey w/Dan~ 100% hooked! :-) My personal friends never grew to love Dan as I did, just a few of his songs such as "Leader of the Band", "Same Old Lang Syne". Made me so happy when I joinged You Tube & found there were many other through all of this music through all of the years fans of his as well. Dan did stay true to himself, his beliefs, saying something in one....

He stayed true to himself refusing to become a slave to the corporate machine and because of that the studios didn't promote his later work. But by then Dan had a body of loyal fans that would follow him on the wonderful journey that each new album brought us. His talent, art, vision, and body of work guarantee his place in music history while the lessons that he taught us through his music remain relevant and profound. It's always so wonderful to meet another DanFan! :)

@autumnblond Thank you for your comment! :) Dan did achieve monster commercial success in the late 70s and early 80s. He had several top 40 hits including "Longer", "Hard to Say", "Leader of the Band", and "Same Old Lang Syne" among others. Many of his albums boast multiple platinum and gold status. He always appreciated the fans and was always very kind to us, but he never allowed himself to believe all the hype and never allowed the record company suits to dictate his art.

Dan is proof that a musician/songwriter is an artist even if he didn't experienced the "commercial" success that these so called artist have today. Why does anyone need to be a commcerical marketable success to be called an artist? I am an artist and I make no money with what I do. It is for me that I create. Every heard of the term, "starving artist"? lol I don't think Dan starved but he was a TRUE artist.

@samboy1288 Even in his final work released after his passing...Dan did something brilliant...he took the first few notes of the first song on his first album (To The Morning) and made them the last few notes on the last song of his final album (Birds)...how is that not ground breaking? When has any other artist done this? The problem was Dan was so good at what he did...that no one gave him credit for the depth and the difficulty of his pieces...That's why he's the muscian's muscian. :)

@samboy1288 On "Nexus" which can be found on "The Innocent Age" album, Dan expertly blends rock, strong guitar and native chanting and strong percussion to create a piece about creation...to this day I've never heard anything like it. Consider that "The Wild Places" and "River of Souls" are albums that include Native American Chant, world beat, an African fertility song, among others.

@samboy1288 Thank you for your comment and I agree that Dan did consistently put out good music...great music. But I have to disagree that he didn't break new ground. In an industry that made demands dictated more by the bottom line than artistry Dan stood strong and refused to yield his artistic expression. No two of his albums are alike soundwise...not many musicians can boast this.

wow, this song is fantastic! dan may not have been breaking new ground throughout his career, but he did consistently put out good music.

@DANSFANFOREVER Thanks for your reply, and for validating what comes through in his music.

@shachardave He was a man of principal, integrity & values. He tried to make the world a better place & spoke out against war, pollution, & nuclear energy among other things. Though he was a very private person, when diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, he tried to alert men to be tested so that they would never know the suffering that he & his family were going through. He not only talked the talk, he walked the walk. Thank you for your post & recognizing Dan's greatness.

If Dan lived his life the same way he wrote, the same way he sang Then indeed he was a very beautiful man.

Thinking of and missing Dan today because of the disastrous oil spill that keeps getting worse. I'm wishing that this song and Dan's Cry in the Forest had been number 1 hits as I think they could have made a huge difference in peoples attitudes and actions. Is anyone even singing about the environment like Dan did?

Amazing and beautiful. Also a sad and necessary reminder which still falls on far to many ears. Thank you for this post. When my days here are done, I REALLY want to hear Dan again...in a jam session with John Denver!

Well done, indeed! (I was nineteen or twenty when the record store where the cool guys worked was playing "Souvenirs," Dan's breakthrough album, and I stopped in my tracks and asked who the artist was. The cool guys were very kind to me, and told me about Dan.
