I find that most modern Satanists are actually atheistic Satanists, not actually worshipping Satan but more so using the Biblical image of Satan to promote some sense of egalitarianism. Casual Satanism, mostly in original black metal (modern black metal is more transcendentalist) is usually either for, yes, shock value, or otherwise simply to make people question zeal on either side of any given dichotomy. The latter of which makes quite a bit of sense actually.
