Legende "Auf Kohle gebor'n" - Komponist/Text/Gesang: Rudy Cash

("Born on Coal" German coal mining song - Written by Rudy Cash)

Memories of a previously flourishing mining time, which established and formed the “Ruhrgebiet” (Ruhr Area = the area around the river Ruhr), by which millions of workers were employed, considering all affiliated suppliers.

Uncountable kiosks existed that were all striving from the coal mines, together with pubs in which the coal miners would drink a quick beer and schnapps after their shift and would play card games (skat) on Sundays.

Both kiosks and pubs in the Ruhrgebiet were predominantly established in close vicinity of the mines, as they would benefit from the mining industry with its thousands of coal miners.

Even the products of the steel manufacturers, ranging from the nails of the wiredrawers to the vehicles of the car manufacturers and many more, were once considered to be part of the steel and coal industry; the industry’s magnitude in the Ruhrgebiet can hardly be described.

“Born on Coal” emerged thanks to a longstanding collaboration between Rudy Cash, the composer of empathetic songs of the coal mining genre, and Wolle from Gladbeck, videographer, print media photographer and former rhythmist.

Not only were music videos of the Cash-Kariger-Duo broadcasted on the former channel “Center-TV” (“1000 Feuer sind erloschen” = “1000 Fires had gone out” + “Steigerlied 2012/Cash Version” = “Overseer 2012/Cash Version”), but both were also selected for a WDR-TV production (West German Broadcasting Channel). This production was focused on both the musical homage of Rudy Cash and the 100th anniversary of the “Rhein-Herne-Kanal” (Rhine-Herne Channel). Kariger had realized this project already in 2014 and it was now reconstructed for the WDR (“Kanale Grande NRW” = “Big Channel North Rhine-Westphalia”). It was broadcasted on 21 November 2014 on WDR-TV.

Videographer Wolfgang Kariger gave the idea for a new “Coal Mining Song” to his friend Rudy Cash based on vast user interest in social media on the video “Schwarzes Gold” (“Black Gold”) that was converted and uploaded for test purposes.

Compared to other videos on YouTube, the video “Black Gold” was chosen most frequently.

Rudy Cash mailed the finalized lyrics of “Born on Coal” already on the following day. The progression of the music in this first version, that was incorporated by Cash in the studio, was judged as anything but ideal by Kariger (who is also a former musician), at the same time insisting on another rework of music and vocals in the studio.

It was bound to happen - after break-through of some private obstacles, Cash came out of the studio with his new revised version which exactly followed Kariger’s advice. After listening to the new version everyone was able to exhale and relax. Cash, as usual, slipped his emotions into the new track. This revised version was accepted and the cutting could commence.
