Formerly known as Her Virgin Womb, a brutal death metal band from the Philadelphia area, ANTIKYTHERA was formed after the members of HVW could not agree on which direction the band's future writings would take. After the departure of former vocalist Rob Holt in early 2011, James Dorton stepped in and immediately began playing shows and a three-song demo was recorded (which would later become 3 of 7 tracks that make up the band's "Cosmicism" release). Antikythera continued playing occasional shows throughout the remainder of 2011, all the while keeping busy with plans for a big 2012 which includes the release of "Cosmicism" (featuring artwork by Mallika Sundaramurthy of Boston's ABNORMALITY, and recorded by Len Carmichael who recorded the latest Swashbuckle album for Century Media along with much, much more), a promotional video for the single "Element Nexus" a tour out to and including a performance at Las Vegas Deathfest 2012, signing a contract with a new manager, countless regional weekend tours, new merchandise, and much, much more.
Antikythera's music has been described as a mix of "And Time Begins" by Decrepit Birth, "Conquering the Throne" from Hate Eternal, "Gateways to Annihilation" era Morbid Angel, and early Spawn of Possession, to give a ballpark idea of what the band sounds like. They bring an intense, energy-filled live performance everywhere they go whether they are playing in front of 5 or 500 people. They don't try to be the most technical, the heaviest, the slammiest, the fastest, or anything else. They just play the kind of death metal they have fun playing, and hope that you have fun listening to them do it.
