Here is the story of how Sukiyaki got it's name and how the English lyrics came to be. The song was recorded by Kyu Sakamoto in 1961. In that same year a group of American rock n roll singers were touring around the world. One of them was Chubby Checkers, not sure about the rest of the group. Japan was the last stop on the tour, then back to the states. They had a couple show stops in Japan. While there a manager for one for the singers, hear the song playing on the radio and was given a copy to take home. When he got back to LA, he give that copy to a DJ friend of his and ask him to listen to it, let him know what he thought of it. He liked it and put on the air, asking his listeners to give their opinion. It was a hit! Capital Records heard it and called Toshiba in Japan. Toshiba was the label company who owned the rights to it. Toshiba gave Capital Records the rights to it for the United States and Canada. The Japanese title is, "I Look Up As I Walk". Some ("Pinhead") at Capital didn't like the title, thinking American's wouldn't understand the meaning of the title. In his useless wisdom, "Sukiyaki" was better. Being something American's know and can relate to. It was Stupid!!! I'm updating the remark made in 1963 by Newsweek Magazine. A Newsweek Magazine columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Uptown Funk" in Japan under the title "Sushi". The song tells the story of a man, that has lost his love of his life to another man. He can't stop crying, over this loss love. In Japan it's disrespectful and brings shame to your family, to be seen crying public. To hide his tears, he looks up at the sky as he walks and whistles. Telling us, this is how he will spend his life, looking up to the sky, whistling. In the English version, the music is the only thing, that's the same. That's how it got it's dumb ass title!
