"Alone Again (Naturally)" is a song by Irish singer--songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1972 on the album, Back to Front, and in total spent six weeks, non-consecutively, at #1 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

In Casey Kasem's American 'Top 40 of the 1970s', "Alone Again (Naturally)" ranked as the fifth most-popular song of the decade (Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was #1). "Alone Again (Naturally)" also spent six weeks at number one on the Easy Listening chart. The track reached #3 in the UK Singles Chart.

It is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer telling of his plans to commit suicide after being left at the altar, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. The mother was not dead at the time that his song was written. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is included on O'Sullivan's The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan album (2004) on the EMI record label. I just enter college that August 72. It was a very small college in the city encrusted between every bang up building in ward. Classrooms were between shops, stores, warehouses, grocery stores, next to the library a cafeteria with a music box and my Spanish classroom in front of it. My girlfriend was in the capital, in college and I was alone, again, naturally and couple of cute girls were there in the cafeteria sipping a coke. I bought one and a half pack of cigarettes. Then one of the girls ask me from the depth of the sweetest of smiles "do you like music?" sweetly I say "yyeeess!" so she pointed me the music box I pull a quarter, check the songs, and there it was this "Alone again" I never heard that before and not I didn't know who Gilbert Sullivan was; you could ask me then any question on the life and times and music and performers of Johann Sebastian Bach, but on pop music. I pressed 5 times just to anoy the girls a bit. I sat down smiling at the girls and they ask me for a cigarette. Then the music started and ... well felt very very alone...again... naturally thinking on my Sara. So I drank my coke take a last drag from the cigarette and left the place very saddened but in love with such a beautiful melody and arrangement. The Spanish 101 Classroom was across the street and I heard the 5 repeats from there. I was crushed when heard "what can I do?" after that I kept going to the cafeteria and play the song, with a coke and a cigarette and with Sara on my mind. Sometimes the cafeteria was packed and boisterous but everybody shut up when they hear the song. I did this at least once a week until I left the College to the big university in the capital. I never have been alone again since I marry her, naturally...

O'Sullivan is a brilliant song writer who understands how to convey emotions through beautiful melodies. The lyrics are melancholy, but the music is uplifting. The contrast makes this such a haunting, memorable song....very nostalgic for someone who was a young child when this song was popular.

A very, very sad song from my childhood. I remember they used to play it on the radio in the morning sometimes back in the 70's. Like in the morning while I was getting ready for school. Alone again, naturally...
