why is everyone arguing about being jazz or not?Does it say it in the title? Is the name of the band: Alex S jazz band or something? If it were like that., Does it matter? The "purity" of the "jazz nerds" that find everything "not true jazz" is pretty much the same as "true metalheads" Both are closeminded assholes, with different aspect only ( the way they dress) , but in the bottom they are the same shit. They think they have the last word of what metal or jazz is, which is impossible.

I'm hardly a musical expert, but even I can tell that this isn't jazz. It sounds more like lounge music to me. I don't think it's bad, but it certainly isn't jazz. I don't think you're being a douchebag, you clearly know what you're talking about and actually are knowledgable in terms of jazz.

ooooooooo metal riffs with a jazzy twist :) I like it. Makes thrash metal calm and relaxing while at the same time keeping the scales and sound

Oscar Peterson....now your talking....Canadian ....king of the jazz pianists....George Benson is a great guitarist.....but guitarist wise as a whole....he couldn't hold Alex's guitar case....when you learn guitar from Joe Satriani.....you end up being one of the best in the world....most of the people you are mentioning had their fame in the 60's or before....dude jazz was the music back then....you shouldn't have a jazz argument in the year 2013....fucking pathetic...name jazz people today

guess what..Alex blows away Django Reinhardt..argueable though... but as great as Django was....he doesn't have the speed or todays mighty sound of the technology of the guitar....and i'm pretty sure that Alex can copy Django to a tee....a lot of these jazz players only come from jazz....they no nothing else.....look up ''the Ballad'' by testament and watch the lead in that video...that's Alex showing you that he is the master of his instrument...even though its not jazz....it is harder to play

how about we just say that Alex blows away any guitarist that you have seen or heard....that's the bottom line buddy....and oh yes did you know that Alex has a BFA for jazz performance...and that this band has reached #7 in the jazz charts....who cares if he's not your type of jazz guy...he is incredible and you are argueing to what you believe...which is like giving us your fucking 2 cents...this guy Alex Skolnick is considered one of the best guitarists on the planet...he can play anything

Is it just me who finds this cover to sound really badly out of tune?

About classification, I'm genuinely curious as to what those identifiable features are. Because having listened to Benny Goodman, Miles (say, BB, Kind of Blue and Tutu), Pharoah Sanders, and Chick Corea's Secret agent (just examples) they seem to have so little in common, they may as well be separate genres. I'm not a big jazz aficionado, but if you can't back up what makes jazz jazz and what makes AS "not jazz" I'll just assume you're pulling it out of your ass. But like I said, just curious.

I couldn't care less about whether this is jazz or not, and I have no idea what AS's reasoning behind calling it jazz. Also, I'm fully aware this isn't swing drumming, but it's an element many people recognize as jazzy and would likely be used in a "jazz" cover of a pop song. Which is my answer to the question "why do people call this jazz".

Because the sound reminds people of jazz; be it 7th chords, swinging drums or whatever. However, jazz is such a broad and loosely (if at all) defined genre that I doubt that you or anyone else is in a position to judge whether something is jazz or not. I think you somewhat missed the point of NailgunDeath's because arguing over what is jazz and what not is arguing over how music should be classified, which, as he implied, is pretty pointless.
