It is a conversation with her father. She is trying to convince him to try therapy, hence the beginning of the song where she gives him all the reasons he would need therapy : His father abandoning them, his present yet still emotionally absent mother. The fact that his mother banished him for being too much like his father. Then at the end he responds and so on. I believe she also tells him about her experience with her therapist and how it helps her. One of the best songs ever written.

With this song I got into AM's world. Since then I've couldn't go out and I don't want to neither. I love her :)

This song just blew me away the first time I heard it. The story-telling, the strange, beautiful melody, the heart-stopping power of the accompaniment. Such creativity, such passion. Definitely my favourite AM song.

hahaha .. you dont need to censer it .. the meaning is already censored and deeply encrypted and you need to work your mind to decode and get some sense out of it - as when you first listen it is a dialogue between two or three people - man , his daughter and a shrink , but NO i think it is just one person like an old man 50 yr old to be exact , remembering back on his life to his daughter and maybe a younger brother but it dosnt really fit . however , he had some psychological issues"a trusting issue" cuz of his life , he was a little that his father turned gay and left them, his mom was alcoholic, sick and abusive towards him as he looked like his father and reminded her of him , but yet he looked after the family - he is not educated and has left school directly to get married , he loves his wife and he has a daughter , and here he is his relationship with his daughter , he loved so dearly and tryingto be like big brother to her but felt a little insulted as she told him to see the shrink, how could she tell that to her dad? whom had seen that much ?? however somehow he is back with his inner thoughts and he thinks she is right ('who are you younger generation to tell me that i have unresolved problems',it was much harder in those days), but then also how he has his soft side ('i was only trying to be the best big brother i could', 'she was only responsive with a drink he was only responsive by photo '). It makes me think more deeply about the grouchy old men i see now!

Has she ever done a piano version of this song? I love this song and I think that would be amazing.

The way Alanis fits the words.. the syllables around through up and over the music.. its part of her genius .. word play in writing.. execution of lyrics.. oh and that voice.. that voice *sigh* ... luv ya Alanis <3 Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie ftw!!!

wow this is like where Alanas must of worked with the band the tea party lol but seriously it has that sound and the song structure is crazy cause its a story song not a verse chorus verse song

this song is about going to psychotherapy. i love how very subtle and deep describes the relationship between client and therapist.
