[Video #84] from http://www.youtube.com/user/MetalGuruMessiah the address for MetalGuruMessiah's Musical Paint Box! Check out my other videos!

"Young Lions" was the title track of Adrian Belew's 1990 album. This was the fifth album that Adrian Belew released, and it's filled with great tracks and fine guitar work. I've always been a huge fan of Adrian Belew's guitar playing style...very distinct and unusual.

The artists that Adrian Belew has worked with or been associated with is incredible; King Crimson, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, Tom Tom Club, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Tori Amos, The Bears, and many more.

I've been wanting to do a video for one of my favorites by Adrien Belew since I began making these videos and had thought of several songs that I wanted to play around with. "Young Lions" is one of my very favorites so it was always a contender, but it moved to the top of the stack mainly due to the fact that I'd been working on another African flavored tune, Bowie's "African Night Flight", and while working on that one, i kept coming to imagery that seemed more fitting for this tune.

Borrowed some video from Bob Rafelson's 1990 film "Mountains Of The Moon" and the BBC Planet Earth....also huge thanks to http://www.youtube.com/user/mamothmanX for the footage of the Masai tribe.....amazingly cool!

Africa is a place of such incredible beauty, mystery and wonder and Adrian Belew did an outstanding job bringing some of the rhythms and mysticism into "Young Lions".

The video for "African Night Flight" that I'll be finishing up soon will be very reminiscent of this one, and will share some of the same pictures and sequences, but it'll be masked and edited differently, and........when you get Bowie's music in front of it....it'll be an entirely different video! Great tunes both, and I'm honored to be able to create some imagery for such incredible music!

[Lyrics]

Hot tribal night

underneath florescent skies

bonfires rage strange

wild waving shouting Picasso faces

In the guise of a lioness

the wind kisses her burning dress

you can fell her animal eyes

you can hear them cry,

"Be the jewel around my neck,

never a tear on my burning dress"

Lying, paralyzed,

a brave prey who lays dying

and is surrounded by angry spirits

hunters, guns, drums, and elephants

Why is this night quiet?

filled with trees filled with eyes

as she prowls around my feet

she throws back her head dress and cries,

"Now you will be mine,

be my young lion"

Why is this night quiet?

why the trees filled with eyes?

as she prowls around my feet

she throws back her head dress and cries,

"Be my young lion"

Adrian Belew is considered to be one of the most talented guitarists of all time, with a range and breadth of style far surpassing some of the more famous names in that field. That's why today's Tune of the Day makes no sense, as it shows off his studio production and synthesizer skills instead of his ability to shine on the guitar. But I've been waiting months to find a week to lead off with this song, and that week has finally arrived. Enjoy!

I would definitely look forward to Men In Helicopters. If you think about it, let me know if you post it. Another song I would suggest is When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin. It would be ambitious to be sure, but they never performed it live, and there is a dearth of video related to the song. Just a suggestion based on my preferences. Be well....

Wow....so funny that in my reply to you I had actually started writing about wanting to do "Men In Helicopters" next, but ran out of space to finish the thought...so just removed the entire reference! Yeah, proof once more that great minds think alike (LOL!)....your suggestion helps me decide to try something for the tune soon. Really appreciate your kind words & your support and encouragement for efforts....hope you find a few more you enjoy as well. See you soon over at your blog! THANKS!

I tried to write a longer response, too long for youtube. I posted it on my blog, link below. I also checked out The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down. Your talent shines. You should think about doing Men In Helicopters. It’s loaded with brilliant visuals. Side Three is another of my favorite Belew albums, and which marks the return of the Prophet Omega. I’m on facebook, Robert Charest. Cheers. Can't post the link. it's authorbob dot blogspot dot com Your name is in the title.

Thank you very much! So great to hear from another serious fan of this incredible tune.....I might have listened to it (almost!) as much as you and yeah, it still amazes! Happy to know you found the video enjoyable.....yeah, this tune doesn't get a whole lot of love so it's really nice to hear from you! Thanks for visiting and supporting the vid!

Fantastic job! I've listened to this song a thousand times since it came out, and it still gives me the chills. Beautiful work, I'm sharing it and will play it again myself many times.

@AstralBlueDreams777 Thanks D's! Belew's style is truly unique & once i hear that first note, I'm always compelled to see where he will go with his guitar...beautifully distorted sonic bliss! I'm a huge fan of his work on Bowie's Lodger album, and as I mention in the description, I'm working up a video for a song off of that album ("African Night Fight") that is rhythmically and lyrically similar..I can't listen to one without thinking of the other, not sure which one I like better!? Thanks!

@plumstreetmusic Thanks! I really appreciate your feedback. Yeah, I was trying to match the rhythm of the song to various short loops...lapping, tribe running, campfire clapping, big lion roar (mostly hidden due to jumpiness), etc. I smoothed it out as much as I could, but I was never able to get it just right, mainly due to difficulties of making the the numerous sort clips loop smoothly...still some jumps as you noted. Though not quite what I hoped for, so happy you enjoyed it! Thanks!

Good job! I like your compositing on this one and the sepia wash. Even though I felt a bit of a jump at the end of the wal sequences, I really liked your synching of the footsteps, lion lapping water, etc. to the rhythm.
