Reading the comments on this video, I am dismayed by Israelis’ and Arabs’ ignorance of each other’s culture, but I remind myself that you’ve been at war for over 65 years. Sadly, I guess it falls to me, a “stupid American,” to try to clear things up. First of all, over half of Israel’s Jewish population has immediate roots in the Arab and Muslim world, so they don’t “steal” Arab or Persian or Turkish culture, they ASSERT those cultures, which are their own. This is especially important in the context of Israel’s history of Ashkenazi (E./C. European) cultural hegemony. Second, Orphaned Land did not themselves borrow Karim Mahmoud’s melody, “Samra Ya Samra”; that happened a generation ago. The Hebrew lyrics to “Nora El Nora” were written a long time ago (1950s?) by Abraham Douek, a Syrian Jew. All older Mizrahi Israelis know the origin of that melody when they sing “Nora El Nora”; many younger Israelis, especially non-religious ones, may not. No Israeli Jew truly educated in the Sephardi/Mizrahi culture thinks that “Nora El Nora” is an original melody written by a Jew or Israeli, but, sadly, many younger Israeli Mizrahi Jews are not as well educated in their culture. Note also that this kind of song--a Hebrew religious song written to an existing folk or popular Arabic/Turkish/Persian etc. melody--is known typically as a “pizmon,” and Jews in the Arabic-speaking world have been writing pizmonim (pl.) for at least 500 years. Most books of Hebrew pizmonim lyrics actually list the name of original Arabic song. The best way to list "Nora El Nora" on a CD would be: “Nora El Nora”; Hebrew Lyrics: Abraham Douek (z”l); Melody: Karim Mahmoud (“Samra Ya Samra”). But nobody is trying to “steal” anyone else’s song or culture here.
