J. Tillman incorporates tons of religious symbolism into his lyrics, but not within the way that religious people would expect them to be used. I think that the ritualism of taking each other's hands expresses something in a physical way that is expressed both in the music and the lyrics of the song. But that's just me.

This song is pretty to sing as a solo. Their harmony is fantastic. Hey, elyssemarie, maybe they went to an Albigensian youth group. Albigensians believed in rebirth (or reincarnation, actually, along with a lot of other weird things).
