Well, Zappa was totally right (as most of the times). Unfortunately, looking at the way things unfolded since then and how they continue to unfold and how they probably will, he was wrong too. Before somebody says the problem lies in prohibition, think twice: maybe you just happen to like drugs. I know all I've witnessed throughout my life and it's no pretty picture. So, I'm sorry but I can't see anything cool in drugs be they "light" or "hardcore", they killed friends, they drove friends insane, they left terrible marks even in those who managed to quit, they made friends become nothing in nothingness land as in never doing anything useful etc. It's funny how everybody always thought Frank took drugs, people know nothing.

i read an interview with lowell george where he said frank fired him for writing a "song about drugs" (willin'). anybody else ever heard that?

He knew some of his fan's used drug's. He never thought drug's should be illegal. But he hoped everyone used in the privacy of their home, and leaved it there. He was arrested for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, he was very clear to everyone around him he did not wish to go back to jail ever again.

I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs, but I love Frank. Who the hell says you have to get wasted to have fun or be productive?

zappa knew what was happening. even back in early 1966 he saw what was going to become of young people in the late 60s early 70s...

Very inspirational to see drugs n rock n roll dont have to go hand in hand. I think the drug popularization in the 60s was a large part due to the media influence.

Frank was half right and half wrong. Right because indeed the MINDLESS glamourization of drugs led to all too many destroying themselves, exactly as the older generation had done with boozing and he was right to worry about kids unknowingly frying their brains (too much acid or weed) or worse doing opiates and harsh chemicals that can kill you (speed. crystal Meth). However note how many of the 'acid Generation' died from Alchohol rather than drugs though; Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, John Bonham, Keith Moon etc but drugs also took more than there share. I help younger people quit or avoid abusing both drugs and alchohol and therefor it would seem that I would agree with Frank completely but I do not; and I indeed think his simplistic reactionary thinking makes things worse by being so simplistic and factually wrong. Just like too much PC, too much food, too much of anything will do you in ; even good stuff (Water; we need it to live but too much and you drown). And what people need is accurate unbiased INFORMATION! Just as some medicine can kill some and cure others we need to develop a culture of self discipline and understanding. WE have differant bodies and indeed you can get a rush with sugar FFS!: So Frank in this area comes of like an old moralyzing religious moralist; which is the opposite of his image and behavior in other areas. He actually did smoke weed 10 times or so (he says in another interview) but it gave him a headache and made him tired. He's probably right (assuming he is being forthright) that that is HIS reaction to it. Think about booze. Some become relaxed, some stupid and others violent, Me I just get headaches, feel nausea and get real tired but I know this is not true for others. The biggest problem for Frank as a musician is that 99% of the best music IS done by people who are inspired when high on something. Hell Groucho Marx , Cab Calloway, Loius Armstrong, the Beatles, Captain Beefheart, Mozart and all the other greats; who were frankly better than Frank (whose music is mostly stiff, anal and immature if very complex and difficult) is a classic example) The burn outs were tragically wrong because they OVER DID IT!, Had no self control or self discipline and did not realize that you must LIVE straight in this world, while taking occasional mental trips to inspire and explore,..I only smoke 1 or 2 hits of good hashish a night when recording or doing music. but live 100% straight outside of that and when I feel blue or down I stay clean to allow my mind to go through those emotions and deal with them consciously!!!. The effect of hash and strong tea gets me psychedelic because although my acid era ended 40 years ago (1981-1984; with maybe 10 well paced serious trips; ie not partaying) just a little lets the brain do the rest after that. So for me it has enhanced my memory, my health and my energy where as in my overdoing period I could feel the damage creeping up ; which is why I stayed 100% clean for 3 years before returning to hash/weed in very limited quantities and started exersizing, reading and working on music.! I recommend this to those who smoke or drink, All other drugs (outside the few spirit searchers who might gain from a short controlled era of psychedelics) are shit and should be avoided; either because they are pointless (Xtacy) or worse life consuming chemicals. Peace out!
