From the album RED AND GOLD 1989

The title track- composed by Ralph McTell and arranged by Fairport Convention.

Simon great story teller but all the band is at his best.

Nice cover picture- The battle for the bridge of Cropredy.

*Red and Gold* by *Ralph McTell* performed by *Fairport Convention*McTell wrote this song specifically for Fairport and it became the title track of their 1987 album. The song concerns a real English Civil War battle for a bridge at Cropredy, a small village in Banbury, Oxon near Oxford. Fairport holds their annual reunion/folk festival in this town every third weekend in August. The song is simply brilliant--each verse leads skillfully and inexorably into each subsequent verse, the story is powerful and the melody is full of a melancholy beauty. The events of the battle are witnessed by a young laboror who has injured himself and is suffering a dream-like fever as he watches the armies clash. This is historical folk songwriting at its best. :)For my dear friend +Emma Selle :D
