So, can anyone point me towards more fairport convention songs in this style? They are great musicians but I don't care much for the classic rock elements in many of their work. This is just so subtle and heartfelt o.O

In response to the comment by Dave Hopwood, it was Queen Mary, eldest daughter of King Henry VIII that had a penchant for burning people alive. This song is about Mary Queen of Scots.Check out the book by Lady Antonia Fraser about her, it's absolutely brilliant!

I've always loved Fairport, how they take influence from North American Folk, British Folk, Celtic, Classical, Medieval, Jazz, Psychedelia, Rock and Roll, Gospel, even a little Spanish music. I thought I was the only one in my circle of friends, but the other night I was at a Kacy and Clayton concert and probably got into 7-8 conversations with different people about how Sandy is a goddess and how Fairport Convention is the ultimate supergroup. It's like everything I every wanted in music and I'm so happy that other people get just as stoked on this band as I do. Cheers!

This is a timeless masterpiece. Not very popular ... unfortunately...

A wonderful song, and a great favourite of mine. It must be said, though, that Mary did have an unpleasant habit of burning people alive, and quite a few at that, even by the standards of her time. But, hey, don't knock it until you've tried it........

This is the story of Mary Queen of Scots. Imprisoned in Fotheringay for 15 years, basically because she had a better claim to the English throne as well.then Walsingham set her up with a false flag operation and they executed her. its a grim story. theres a lot to it.

Sandy Denny had a peerless voice and she sang some of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Beautiful song about a poignant moment in our history. We British are lucky to have a rich, dramatic past full of characters, battles and revolution. In lonely castles you can feel the life, love and death that took place within the walls. It's worth a hundred 'disneylands' or 'las vegases'.
