This beautiful hymn is well-known to those who live on or by the sea; and particularly those who serve on ships or lifeboats. A tribute to those who served and died at sea, including Emmanuel Leonard, my late great-uncle from Plymouth, Devon, and of the Royal Navy.

God bless our mariners, fisherman, and all naval personnel worldwide! The oceans and great lakes of our planet are unforgiving.

I remember signing this beautiful hymn at Morning Prayers at my preparatory school. Many boys had fathers serving in the RN and Royal Marines around the time of the Falklands War. When I became a keen sailor, I'd sing this to myself, only really understanding the significance as I became older, and of course finally understanding why they played it so often at prayers. Thank you for posting. One of my favourites.

My father was a Navy Pilot. We played this at his funeral in 1999. He loved his country and this song. He was a man of great integrity and a kind and gentle father. I miss him.

Agreed, always brings up memories when I hear it. The first time I was asked to lead a service (was on a church trip), I chose this hymn - my friends found it an ironic choice since we were traveling by ferry that day, but I chose it simply because I enjoy it so.RIP LCdr Cecil Teakle & LCdr Archie Jones, both RCN

Am ex Merchant Navy... and thank you for posting this hymn, if I can only watch it without tears pouring down my face..........I am a volunteer for War Memorials, Piddiflicks, and one of my projects was Photoing all contents of Holly Trinity Guards Garrison Church, Windsor.I believe it is the only church allowed to display the Royal Navy White Ensign. This is because Lord Mountbatten gave a service there.I would gladly send you the photo/info of it f you would like it ??This goes a small way to showing my thanks to you Sir.Kind and warm regards,TerryRV5245

Eternal Father, strong to save,Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deepIts own appointed limits keep;Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,For those in peril on the sea! O Christ! Whose voice the waters heardAnd hushed their raging at Thy word,Who walked'st on the foaming deep,And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,For those in peril on the sea! Most Holy Spirit! Who didst broodUpon the chaos dark and rude,And bid its angry tumult cease,And give, for wild confusion, peace;Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,For those in peril on the sea! O Trinity of love and power! Our brethren shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them wheresoe'er they go;Thus evermore shall rise to TheeGlad hymns of praise from land and sea.

A lovely song which always manages to send a chill up this Marine's spine especially in a performance like what you posted.

May God guide the US submariners. I was almost shot with a .45 by a squid back in the 70s who was out of...somewhere. Again, God bless the silent service. Waltzing Matilda comes to mind.
