Please read description:

"A intentional vocal break is an abrupt change in sound when going from one vocal mode to another. Used as an effect, a vocal break can contain many expressions such as surrender or devotion. Vocal breaks can be used in all the modes and consequently at different volumes, different sound colours, in many parts of the voice, and on many vowels" (CVT)

Some of these maybe not intentional lol, but they sound good too, the words with caps show where the breaks are, oh and some are lipped yes, but I just wanted to use them as examples, so don't bother in reminding me they're lipped :)

I always thought her vocal breaks were because of her nodules..I didn't know it was a technique.

This isn't exactly what I would describe as a vocal break, it's more of a controlled way of going from relaxed to highly focused chord closure. Usually one gets the chords closed right at the onset of the sung note but if you slow down the process and sing whilst the chords are actually closing then you end up with a high rate of air flow in combination with the chords very quickly going from a more relaxed position to full closure, which suddenly reduces the flow of air, and this creates that squeak that you hear. Wendy Moten tends to do this a lot too.

Is therea real musical term for this? I love this technique. i do it too. I like it when mariah does it. I also like it when P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Allison Iraheta, Adele, Alicia Keys, Lady gaga (when she sings live), and haley reinhart do this.

Sia and John Legend does this too. I actually do it too when I sing.. Very freeing technique. I LOVE when Mariah does it though!

The 'aitch' (H) sound is typically a very difficult sound to sing through and Mariah always does a great job of intentionally breaking her vocals to stay on pitch and hit the next note. Amazing.

The ones like when she says "hard" or "place" or "hesitate" and generally anything beginning with an h or when saying most vowels aren't because of vocal breaks, those are because of her nodules. They cause a squeaking sound that is similar.
