It's retarded to think that the song is just for a breakup. Her 2001 emotional breakdown started around 1996/1997. She didn't win any category she was nominated at 1996 Grammy Awards, she was very angry with her recording label, specially Tommy Motolla, Sony CEO those times and her husband. In 97 her voice started to change due excessive use, and in 2001 she couldn't handle all the pressure anymore. Sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.

This is Mariah Carey's signature song! It was huge in the spring of 1998 and Columbia/Sony really dropped the ball by refusing to give this song an official commercial release! Mariah constantly fought with the execs because of their refusal to release Underneath The Stars, Butterfly, The Roof, and Breakdown! She even mentions it in a few interviews and in the booklet for her Greatest Hits and #1's! I understand that songs like Butterfly and Breakdown were inspired by the divorce but Tommy should have put personal issues aside when dealing with Mariah!
