Steve Reich city LifeCity Life est une œuvre du compositeur américain Steve Reich (né en 1936). C’est une œuvre de musique contemporaine créée en 1995.Il s’agit d’une musique mixte car mélangeant sons acoustiques (instruments de musiques) et sons pré-enregistrés restitués sur scène à l’aide d’un clavier échantillonneur (bruits de la ville de New-York notamment).Steve Reich au travers de cette œuvre se situe dans le courant de la musique dite répétitive ou minimaliste, styles de musiques apparus aux États-Unis dans la deuxième moitié du XXème siècle.Dans le premier mouvement, 3 axes d’étude ont retenu mon attention, du général au particulier :D’abord le matériel sonore, c’est à dire ce qui fait le son dans cette œuvre et qui est commun à toute l’œuvre.Ensuite l’écriture musicale du premier mouvement qui permet de bien saisir la volonté descriptive du compositeur dans cette œuvre.Enfin une analyse détaillée du thème et de son motif générateur.LE MATERIEL SONORE :Nous constatons l’emploi d’un petit ensemble instrumental, la présence de bruits enregistrés ainsi que d’une interjection « Check it out » qui donne son nom au mouvement.L’ensemble instrumental est constitué d’instruments à vent (2 flûtes, 2 hautbois et 2 clarinettes), à cordes (2 violons, alto, violoncelle et contrebasse), 2 pianos, 2 vibraphones et diverses percussions.Les bruits et l’interjection sont quant à eux restitués à l’aide de 2 claviers échantillonneurs. Le compositeur a pour cela travaillé tous ces sons sur ordinateur pour les rendre musicaux. Puis il les a affecté à une ou plusieurs touches d’un clavier électronique (comme un synthétiseur = un échantillonneur).Étant donné la mixité des sources sonores (instruments acoustiques et sons diffusés sur haut-parleur), il s’agit d’une musique mixte.L’ÉCRITURE MUSICALE ET LE THÈME :On remarque deux parties que l’on distingue par une différence de caractère et d’écriture musicale.La première est calme et sereine, la deuxième plus agitée et rythmée.Cette opposition se retrouve dans l’écriture musicale.La première partie est composée de façon verticale (des accords en homorythmie), la deuxième de façon horizontale (une mélodie jouée en canon).La première partie, introduction :Tous les instruments jouent en homorythmie, c’est à dire qu’il sont synchronisés, mais sur des notes différentes, ce sont des accords. Il se dégage une sensation de stabilité contrariée par la durée imprévisible de chacun de ces accords.La deuxième partie :Elle est constituée d’un thème (la mélodie principale d’une oeuvre musicale) qui donne une sensation d’empressement et d’irrégularité :thème "Check it out"Steve Reich le fait progressivement jouer en canon très rapproché par des instruments identiques (les 2 vibraphones et les 2 pianos) ce qui crée un effet d’écho (amplifier par l’utilisation de la stéréo).Il greffe à sa composition instrumentale les bruits pré-enregistrés créant ainsi une sorte de confusion sonore. Cela complète sa vision d’une ville grouillante d’activité avec les déplacements aléatoires de ses habitants.Le point de départ de l’ensemble de la composition peut se résumer au premier motif du thème. Il est en effet une transcription sonore de l’échantillon « Check it out ».LE TROISIÈME MOUVEMENT : Les paroles utilisées dans ce mouvement sont celles d’une manifestation de Noirs américains se déroulant dans la ville de New York. Steve Reich a opté pour l’utilisation de la technique de la « boucle » propre à la musique techno ou au hip-hop. Seules certaines des syllabes sont audibles, souvent que deux ou trois de la phrase. Cette musique est une nouvelle fois très répétitive : tout est construit sur un rythme répété et utilisé en canon. On a du coup une impression d’obsession, de caractère étouffant et stressant. Ainsi, le compositeur tente-t-il de rendre musicalement l’énergie et la violence des propos de la foule en colère.Ce mouvement constitue le point culminant de l’œuvre. Se situant dans une position centrale, c’est celui qui est le plus stressant, tendu.CONCLUSION :Steve Reich nous livre ici un véritable reportage sonore de la ville de New-York, et plus particulièrement du quartier de Manhattan, grâce a l’emploi d’une musique descriptive.L’utilisation quasi systématique du canon est caractéristique de ce compositeur qui se définissait lui-même, à ses débuts, comme un compositeur de musique de phase (travail sur le décalage). De même l’utilisation de sons divers et de leur utilisation musicale lui est particulièrement habituelle et est caractéristique de la musique de la seconde moitié du XXème siècle en relation avec les évolutions technologiques et notamment informatiques.C’est par ces différentes caractéristiques que Steve Reich reste un compositeur de premier plan, il réussit dans une oeuvre sensible a réunir un grand nombre d’évolutions musicales propres à son époque et à en faire un objet recevant une critique quasi unanime, à la fois sur le plan musical, mais aussi sur sa vision de la société moderne.
