It is a Haitian folk song written in Creole that has been sung for generations. The Haitian peasants use the “daki” language which is a kind of double talk. Those lyrics can be understood literally, as written, or taken in a wider context in their struggles for a better life as they always call upon the Gods who know so much about nature and have so much power, and a leader whose knowledge and power can help make positive changes. The song was first heard singing by a troubadour group in the mid 60's...interpreted by some more populart artist in the late 60's and early 70's like Ti corn, Mlle Deschamps and numerous other haitian artist...It is unsure of what version Paul Simon interpreted but he sure did a pretty good job at it.

Wonderful song...The translation of mal 69798999 is actually the most accurate...Also stop calling it French-creole. The language is Creole (KREOL) Some word are originated from the french, other are spanish and some are just pure african dialect but together so therefore is not french. I speak both and I can tell the difference. Just tought about putting this out there.

Here gangan refers to Ougan, which is a healer in the voodoo tradition. I don't really know if it actualy has a french origin.
