This song has fascinated me for years. It tells a story without seeming to tell one. It is three views of the same woman. ("When I first saw Yvonne," "When I next saw Yvonne," "When I last saw Yvonne.") The narrator has conflicted emotions about her, which he seeks to hide from her. ("When I next saw Yvonne, volcanoes erupted, but I didn't dare let it show.") It is not merely a song about a lost love, it is about two lovers who cannot communicate. By the end of the song, the narrator sees through Yvonne's indifference. ("Come on, Yvonne, you're not foolin' me.") The bass playing in this song is intricate. The high voice singing "Yvonne" toward the end is haunting. By the way, I do NOT share the belief that Yvonne is dead at the end. Yes, she is "covered in roses," but the words are "a sadness had entered her life." People seem to be hearing the word "entered" as "ended." The narrator is not singing "a sadness had ended her life," but "a sadness had entered her life." It is a very subtle study of two people who do not deal with each other after their initial connection.
